The city of Ellicott covers a total area of about 32 square miles almost entirely land. The city is bordered on the north by the edge of Baltimore County, on the south by the town of Columbia, and on the west by the community of West Friendship. Ellicott City is believed to be built upon seven hills, like the city of Rome. These hills are just southeast of Old Ellicott City next to the Patapsco River.

The city was first founded by three Quaker brothers from Buck County, Pennsylvania. The three brothers decided to settle upon the beautiful wilderness that was just upriver from modern day Elkridge, Maryland. They then built a flour mill, and created the town of Ellicott’s Mills. This town proved to be one of the biggest manufacturing and milling towns east of the Mississippi. The Ellicott brothers significantly changed local farming by encouraging farmers to plant wheat rather than tobacco. Ellicott Mills was the first terminal for the historic Baltimore and Ohio Railroad line, and the station was built out of granite blocks from the local quarry. Today the site has been designated as a National Historic Landmark and also serves as a history museum because. This station is considered to be the oldest surviving American railroad station.

One attraction in Ellicott City is the Thomas Isaac Log Cabin. This cabin was built around 1780 by an early settler of Ellicott Mills. It can be found on the west side of Main Street in Ellicott City, and one will find historians dressed up in authentic costumes teaching about the city’s history. Ellicott City also features many ghost tours running through one of the most haunted cities on the east coast. These tours take visitors to places such as the Lilburn Mansion, the Hayden House, Mt. Ida, the B & O railroad bridge, the old Ellicott City Fire Station, and to the Patapsco Female Institute.
